ACTIVITIES of DEBTEC
                (1998 - 2003)

BASIC RESEARCH

Our scientists have been working in DEBTEC’s own laboratory to develop new technology and make the utilization of existing technologies easier in the development of agriculture, production process and sustainable environment. DEBTEC’s major contribution has been in the following disciplines.

Experiment is performed
 on plant tissue culture
at the DEBTEC lab.

[MICRO PROPAGATION TECHNOLOGY]
[CONSERVATION OF MEDICINAL PLANT]
[CONSERVATION OF ENDANGERED WETLAND TREE SPECIES]

MICRO PROPAGATION TECHNOLOGY

DEBTEC has a modern Tissue Culture Laboratory. We are dong mass propagation of Orchid, Neem, Banana, Bamboo, Potato, Hijol, Korach. Medicinal Plants like Rauvolfia serpentina, Randia dumetorum (threatened species) etc. and other ornamental plants. DEBTEC has developed community growers comprising of unemployed women. We have developed disease free orchid plants in our laboratory through micro propagation technology and these plantlets are now being cultivated by the farmer in our project site at Luxmipur.

CONSERVATION OF MEDICINAL PLANT

DEBTEC has inspired the villagers to build ‘Backyard Home Garden of Medicinal Plants’ and established 10 medicinal plant gardens at Luxmipur. DEBTEC has 20 medicinal plants which are commercially important for ex-situ conservation and cultivation.

CONSERVATION OF ENDANGERED WETLAND TREE SPECIES

DEBTEC is conserving the endangered wetland tree species like Hijol (Barringtonia acutangula) and Korach (Ponganid tinnata). These two wetland species are now threatened and if they are not conserved properly they will be extinct forever.

ON GOING PROJECTS

DEBTEC is conducting a project named ‘Development of Information Database on Medicinal Plants’ supported by the Ministry of Science, Information and Communication Technology, Govt. of Bangladesh.

Arsenic Mitigation, DEBTEC has initiated the work on Arsenic at Laxmipur district which is the hot spot for arsenic. About 10000 arsenic free devices need at the projexcted area. DEBTEC scientist s have surveyed the Dakhin Maguri of Shahajadpur village and found 237 tube wells are arsenic contaminated out of 238 tube wells. DEBTEC has already established two deep tube wells on the 26th March in the occasion of independent day from Local Govt. of the Ministry, Govt. of Bangladesh. But two villages need at least 20 deep tube wells. Due to fund constrains DEBTEC can not fulfill the demand of the project area. The women of them have t carry the drinking water from long way. The women are mostly affected and suffer for the arsenic contamination.

DEBTEC has already conducted the training on bio-fertilizer to the rural women at Laxmipur district, Bangladesh where they using their kitchen and agricultural waste tern into organic fertilizer. For medicinal plants bio-fertilizer is most important.   DEBTEC has successfully the campaign to use briquette as alternative of fuel woods.

COMPLETED PROJECTS

DEBTEC has successfully completed the project, ‘Collection, evaluation, improvement and propagation of native orchids through tissue culture’, funded by Bangladesh Agriculture Resource Council (BARC) and Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. Of Bangladesh, 1991-2001.

  • Rapid Propagation of Disease Free Seed Potato through Tissue Culture’ is another example of the successful project implementation by DEBTEC, funded by the Ministry of Science, Information and Communication Technology, Govt. of Bangladesh, 1998-2000.

MOTIVATIONAL WORK IN ORDER TO CREATE PUBLIC AWARENESS CONCERNING BIODIVERSITY & CONSERVATION

DEBTEC is conducting Motivational work through group discussions, informal education and social participation in order to create public awareness concerning biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity their livelihood. Students of Secondary and Higher Secondary level education may play a vital role in the conservation of wild life and biodiversity. We have started a program to educate the students about environment, wild life, biodiversity, sustainable use and conservation.
